My dad always taught me to be strong, but I’m a crier at my core. One level above or below happy, and my nose stings with tears. As an independent woman, it’s embarrassing, like I’m proving the world right by having emotions. But I’m not proving anything to Dustin Barrie.

I’m only about to cry because I’m angry, but he wouldn’t know the difference.

“Days are only what you make of them,” my dad always says.

I notice he’s floating away, so I reach out, cupping his palm in mine. Water laps between our arms when I tug him closer. I realize I don’t want him to leave my side. Or maybe I’m scared that he will.

“We’ll be like otters,” I say by way of an excuse. “They hold hands, so they don’t get lost from their friend.”

He smiles. “I’d love to be an otter with you, Starkey.”

“If you want to board that train and go, that’s fine. I’ll be your roommate anywhere else too.” He threads his fingers through mine. “You’re my otter. I’m not gonna let you drift away.”
