"Yeah," I whispered, closing the book. "Me, too."

I honestly don't recall if I read this book as a kid, but it follows the kids defending the Hork-Bajir valley from the yeerks, interspersed with a narrative of Jake great-great-grandfather defensive a small town during the civil war.

I've gotta say, I do like the metaphor in its inexactitude. The townspeople and the free Hork-Bajir are not quite parallels to each other--the townspeople expect that their town will be defended and for most of the book, are themselves unwilling to defend it. The runaway negroes* and the campers who join the animorphs are not exact parallels either. Nor are the animorphs and the union soldiers.

I also like what the metaphor did for us. It literalized this sci-fi war by putting it in conversation with a real war, a real war to end slavery, and a real battle where those who had been enslaved, those who had been bystanders, and those who had enlisted to defend others fought.

I didn't necessarily like how the metaphor was literally half of the book, but, to get that ending thought, and a couple others thoughts that came out of the metaphor, well, it is what it is.

I think this book does a lot to get the reader ready for the final arc of the series. Godspeed.
