Despite the rating I did enjoy reading this. I like the characters, the action is pretty good. But it felt aimless and inconclusive. I know it's part of a series, but it almost felt like conflict would resolve and a new one would begin without ever getting a chance to celebrate it being resolved. It's hard to explain the feeling I had finishing this book, but it was such a long and slow read/listen for me.

One is the heiress of an empire. The other is a nomad of the steppes, daughter of a chieftan, who, through no fault of her own, becomes a monster. But who is still loved.

It went on a little too long, but it was a good story.

This book takes some risks. The majority of it is written in the form of a letter from one MC to the other, so it’s mostly told in the second person point of view. I get that this is a turn-off for a lot of people, but I actually think it worked very well for this particular story.

The Tiger’s Daughter doesn’t follow a central plot, really. It’s mostly setting the stage for the rest of the series. So what is this book even about, you may ask? Basically, we follow one character’s recollection of her life with the other main character. From birth until their eventual marriage, we watch them fall in love, navigate their roles in their respective families, and find what plays they can make as members of opposing sides of a fractured nation. That’s why I think the letter format works so well. It makes it very tender and personal. The romantic chemistry in this book is by far the best thing, and I really don’t think it would have been had it not been written as a letter. 

The Tiger’s Daughter does have its flaws. Mostly, some continuity errors that really shouldn’t have made it past the editing stage. There was also some awkward writing and phrases that didn’t seem to fit this fantasy world, words like “idiot” and “secondhand embarrassment” just stuck out like a sore thumb. The writing could also get a bit repetitive, particularly in descriptors. 

But despite this, these flaws didn’t really throw me out of the story. It was distinctly a debut novel, and so I hope to see growth in the next two books.

Overall, I thought this was pretty excellent. It has a beautiful love story, great fight scenes, and moments that will shock you. I’d recommend this to any fantasy readers, especially ones who would like to try a unique mode of storytelling.

I don't know if it's because of the stressful times we're in right now or what, but I was so immersed in this story that I was able to forget about it all for a while. I absolutely loved it! This has been on my shelf for a while, and I just wasn't ever in the mood for it. Not sure what I was expecting, but this was amazing! The writing is fantastic, but the characters are probably my favorite part. I just can't say enough great things about this book. If you like fantasy, read it!

a story told primarily from one point of view then from another person in shorter chapters…. 

im usually not a fan of books told in a letter format, BUT as i was reading, the story had me following along with the characters and i was curious to see where it was going, im also a big fan of the female female relationship this book has. id be eager to see where the story continues on in the later books.
