This was exactly what I needed when I needed it. I need something easy to read when I was at my peak of being sick so I fell to this YA book and it did just that. The concept was super cute and easy to follow. It was also so unserious that you didn’t need to think too hard when reading it. Which was what I was needing. I thought it was super cute. I do think it may have run too long but overall I liked it and excited to read more of K.L. Walther’s books after my first.

What Happens After Midnight brings readers along on the journey of Lily Hopper as she is finishing boarding school and is invited to join an epic end-of-the-year prank by her ex-boyfriend, Taggart Swell. When Lily realizes that Tag is the mastermind of the prank, she must ignore her feelings and stick to the commitment she made of one fun night with a group of pranksters. Attempting to hide and sneak into the school buildings, run away from security guards, and not get caught proves to be so much more interesting when she spends the night in close proximity to her ex-boyfriend, who her heart still appears to want despite the breakup. How can they so easily fall into old habits and why does it feel so natural to be with him even after their time apart? With senior year ending, old secrets coming to light, a prank night that feels like a treasure hunt, and her ex-boyfriend at her side, Lily experiences an unforgettable night that shapes the rest of her time at Ames. 

As a lover of The Summer of Broken Rules, I was immensely excited to read this, and it was even better than expected. I found myself being completely pulled into their prank night and I constantly needed to know what would happen next. Additionally, the Taylor Swift references were highly appreciated, I adored it. The characters are so immensely lovable, and I felt for every single one of them. The relationship between Lily and her mom Leda immediately reminded me of Gilmore Girls because of their closeness, jokes, and the feeling of them being not only mom and daughter, but true friends who tell each other everything. I found myself relating to Lily, especially because readers get to understand her as someone who has a lot of love to give but is terrified to lose those she holds near. It was interesting to read a story of a more complicated relationship between two people who are very much in love but are so scared to lose each other that they would rather let go. Lily and Tag are drawn to each other and so easily fall into their old routine when the other is near. It was heartwarming to see a couple that knows each other so well and only truly wants the other person to be happy. The sweetness of them knowing little details about how to calm the other person down without uttering a word or needing any assistance to understand what the other person is thinking was incredibly wholesome. 

The angst had my heart sinking and I couldn’t wait to uncover every secret that had never been told. Every time there was a new detail about Tag and Lily’s past, including their relationship and their breakup, I found my heart leaping out of my chest. I was immensely invested in their relationship and each of the two individual characters. The author has a beautiful way of making these characters come to life while giving readers a peak into each character’s hardships. I believe that this made them feel incredibly real to me while I also found myself feeling completely connected to the two main characters. What Happens After Midnight did perhaps have a more mature edge to it in comparison to The Summer of Broken Rules, which I absolutely adored as much as it played with my feelings. I would highly recommend this book as I found myself loving it and it could even be a new favorite! Trust me, you have to read this.
