Like Dragonflies

I wanted to like this book. Wanted to LOVE it. I absolutely adore K. Webster’s work, my favorite being “Hale”. And maybe that was the problem - as I read “Like Dragonflies”, I found myself constantly comparing it to “Hale”. 

But “Like Dragonflies” is absolutely nothing like “Hale”. Taboo, yes. A romance between siblings, yes. But there’s no real drama, no real angst, and don’t even get me started on the dialogue. I can suspend my disbelief when it comes to dialogue in romance novels because it’s a fantasy and at the end of the day, no one really talks the way they do in romance novels. 

But with lines like, “You helped me paint colors on my stone wall,” I found myself cringing and lacking any empathy towards the characters.

Maybe it read strangely to me because this was a collaboration between Webster and another author. I’m honestly not sure. But this book just wasn’t it. I’m a lover of all things taboo, and even the taboo aspect of this book couldn’t keep me engaged. Even if you love K. Webster (because, let’s face it, the woman can write the hell out of taboo romance), I’d say skip this one. It lacked something I can’t articulate, and instead it gave me second hand embarrassment from cheesy dialogue, as well as a relationship I just couldn’t root for.
