The Escapades of Tribulation Johnson

The Escapades of Tribulation Johnson is one of my all time favourite books. Karen Brooks has not only created a wonderful story, filled with vibrant and complex characters, and kept a balanced pacing with the plot, she has also managed base majority of the events and characters in her book on real historical records. Tribulation Johnson was the fictional means in which we viewed the very real Aphra Behn, one of the first ever female playwrights. Tribulation Johnson was a delightful character, and many of the other characters were fascinating to witness. Brooks’ writing was inspired, filled with elegant language and a manner of speech that reflects the time period (despite it being somewhat challenging to read). The story of Tribulation Johnson, Aphra Behn and the other various characters in this book have captured my heart and soul. Praise to Karen Brooks.
