this is objectively a good book. it is well written, the story makes sense, the twists are laid out in a way that allows the reader to figure them out if they play close attention. <br /><br />unfortunately i just don’t care about it. it is 400 odd pages and i just didn’t at any point find myself griped by the story. <br /><br />Karin Slaugther is a good author, a great author actually, she just isn’t for me. 

Definitely slow to start, but all the backstory is worth it and makes a full circle. Great twists

I thought this book was so captivating and vivid the whole time. One my favorite authors so glad I found another book to like. 

Never thought the whole book wasn’t about madison and shiane. But the switch of time lines still kept my attention because of the new similar case. Jade coming in was a total surprise to me. Their relationship, also wasn’t expecting that. Loved the police work, catching Adam but then switching perspectives completely to catch the most unexpected murders.

This is a fabulous new series to fall in love with.  Set in a small community, the kind where everyone knows your business, the murder of a teenager riles the local population and the perpetrator is soon behind bars.  12 years later a similar incident occurs, a third girl is missing.  Will they be able to find her safe and unharmed or will tragedy strike for a 3rd time?

North Falls native Emmy is the police chief's daughter, one of the original missing girl's was the step-daughter of her best friend.  With a name synonymous with the creation of the county, Emmy had a lot to live up to.  She is a great officer but will anyone ever recognise her as someone who can lead an investigation or just the chief's daughter?

As we learn more about Cheyanne and Madison we realise that there is more to these teenagers than we first thought.  They were hiding secrets from everyone, including each other. These secrets have bled over into the current incident and it looks like history is repeating itself.  But the original accused was in prison so is this a copycat or was he working with someone else?

I loved watching the action unfold, learning more about Emmy and her family as layers of the secrets in her family are peeled away.  The romance subplot with her lawyer beau didn't get in the way of the story/suspense and added a layer of vulnerability to Emmy.  There is great LGBTQIA representation and even though this is set in a very small town, it didn't give off exclusionary vibes at all and I found most of the characters to be accepting and respectful of others.  Emmy is such a mix of kickbutt cop, worried mum, put-upon wife/ex-wife, and care-giver. She shows vulnerability in her domestic life, even while being the complete competent cop at work.

This is a brilliantly twisty thriller layered with family secrets, redemption, and forgiveness.  There are a few themes that some may struggle with: child abductions/sexual assault/grooming/coercive behaviour/alcohol & drug addiction/grief/mental decline.
