Differs a little bit from the other books in the series but I think it was an interesting change of pace. 

The fourth Grant County novel, from the No. 1 Bestseller. When medical examiner Sara Linton and police chief Jeffrey Tolliver take a trip away from the small town of Heartsdale, it should be a straightforward weekend at the beach. But they decide to take a detour via Jeffrey's hometown and things go violently wrong when Jeffrey's best friend Robert shoots dead an intruder who breaks into his home. Jeffrey and Sara are first on the scene and Jeffrey's keen to clear his friend's name, but for Sara things aren't so simple. And when Jeffrey appears to change the crime scene, Sara no longer knows who to trust. Twelve years later, Sara and Jeffrey are caught up in a shockingly brutal attack which threatens to destroy both their lives. But they're not random victims. They've been targeted. And it seems the past is catching up with both of them ...

This was a bit different from the other books in the Grant County series because it had 2 timelines: one with a hostage situation that lasts for the whole book, and a parallel story set in the past when Sara and Jeffrey went to visit his home town. It's not all pink and ribbons as usual because it's Karin Slaughter, but it wasn't too dark either, which is why it only got 4 stars from me. I'm very happy we didn't see too much about Lena in this one though because she's way too annoying. Excited to read the next installment.

i definitely liked this one better than the 3rd but not as much as the first 2. the initial, present day, "crime" was so crazy and exciting but then immediately flashing to the past kind of took you out of the story. however, once the "past" story started picking up, i didnt really mind it. i really liked getting to know Sara and Jeffrey's past a bit better, but felt like the present day "crime" was not entirely fleshed out at the end.

★★★★ ehhhhh-pretty-ok kind of 4 Stars! 


Another day, another Grant County book. I've been doing this for 4 days straight now. One does not simply take the suspense and the dramas lightly. Oh, the anticipation! 



But believe it or not, compared to the previous 3, this book is like a small break to my gentle soul. I mean, it's neither that graphic nor violence. Shocking, yes. The first chapter almost had me a damn heart attack. Also, it was dark but in the creepy small town with secrets kind of way. Reminded me of Gillian Flynn's Dark Places. 

What else...it's very well structured and written, considering it's a back-and-forth between the past and the present. And Karin Slaughter could have passed for a steamy romance novel writer (yup). The cliff hangers were well placed throughout, and the final revelation has come to the surface in a very smooth and satisfying fashion. 

BUT. yeah, there's a but
after all those nice A+ elements, I felt like....something's missing 



Maybe it's because this one's not very adrenaline-driven at all. In fact, it's lagging as hell, especially around the part that built up to the big revelation on Jeffrey's past. It was at least 10-15 pages too long, in my opinion. And then the epilogue felt rushed and abrupt. 

Or maybe it's because I could see that twist coming from a thousand miles away... A bit disappointed about that. 

Or maybe it's because once again, Lena remained the sole emotional punching bag of the series. The shittiness-0-meter of her suffering has gone from pitiful to now absolutely comical. It's alarmingly unrealistic at this point, y'all. 



But careerwise, I'm glad she now rose from the ashes. 

I am also well aware that Karin Slaughter has intended this book to be a somewhat an alternative starting point of the series, and it becomes evident that one can start at any point of the series and still be able to grasp the big picture of what's Grant County orbited around and about. 

So if you happened to scroll down this far and haven't read any of the books yet, I must say otherwise, folks. It's better to know Jeffrey, Sara, and Lena from the point which Blindsighted took place and work up chronologically to here. Or I won't think you'd feel invested enough to continue.

Speaking of which, I did like Jeffrey and Sara in this one. 

Great book overall. I'm moving on to the next one as we speak. Please please please stop torturing the main characters. I think they've had enough!

Book 4 of the Grant County series, but this doesn't take place over a series of days rather it takes place over a single day. Starting off with an action packed and stunning shoot out at the precinct. Sara and others are held hostage. Most of this story also take place in the past surrounding Sara and Jeffery and their time in Jeffery's hometown investigating a killing that had taken place as well as a skeleton that looks to be part of another murder. Very mysterious and intriguing as we peice together the events of the past and what it has to do with the present. As the two timelines start to converge we get plenty of surprises that really help to tie the whole story together. A thrilling fast paced read that I really enjoyed.
