pure escapism

This was a miss for me. Torn between 1 and 2 stars. My biggest issue with this book is that all of the other characters treat Daisy like crap, especially her own sister. I was waiting for Daisy to tell them all to eff off and go back to the States but no, she just takes it. Daisy heads off to New Zealand for her sister Lacey's wedding. Lacey has been living in NZ for 5 years and has a doctorate in botany, which is how she met her super geeky fiance. The crap started with Daisy's arrival in New Zealand. She's been traveling for 13+ hours with a massive time zone shift after catching her long term live-in BF cheating on her with her friend and getting laid off from her job of 10 years. Can someone give this woman a freaking break here? She lands and tries to call her sister and her parents several times to see how to get to the city they are in, but no one answers. Her sister Lacey is a massive bitch - she sends someone to pick Daisy up but can't even so much as text her? Yes she landed a day earlier than she was expected (which kicks off a series of "Daisy acting like an airhead" that makes her hard to like...), but you can't have some basic courtesy to not have her feeling stranded at the airport? Or even to explain you sent a guy to pick her up? You just expect her to get in a truck with a random dude because he says so for a 4 hour drive to some other city? Yup. And she does. Tai, our "hero", takes "grumpy/gruff H" to an extreme all the way over to Asshole territory. He gives Daisy so much shit for arriving early and for bringing too much luggage (2 bags) after knowing her for all of one minute. We find out that he thinks Daisy is a lazy ass, spoiled flake who gets whatever she wants because that's what her own sister has been telling people. They arrive at the house they're staying at for the wedding and no one even thinks that maybe Daisy might need a rest or a shower - nope, they expect her for cocktails within minutes of arriving. She comes down 5 minutes later and Lacey was all "nice of you to grace us with your presence". Look, I get sibling rivalry and hurt feelings from childhood things and all of that - if Lacey had just acted hurt or distant, she might have been a sympathetic character. But constantly taking pot shots at Daisy just makes her an irredeemable bitch. Add to that the fact that this grown-ass woman literally has meltdowns when things don't go exactly her way. I wanted to punch her in the face for the whole book. Their parents aren't too much better. The fiance, Richard, talks to her like she's a total moron and is very condescending. And the other wedding guests...are just insufferable. So why after all of this bullshit would Daisy ever ever agree to a 10-day sail from NZ to Fiji with Tai, her sister, and her new husband? NO ONE in their right mind would agree to torture themselves this way but Daisy does. Her sister practically throws a fit when Daisy doesn't want to go on this trip, saying her honeymoon will be RUINED so Daisy says she'll go. They get like 10 minutes underway before Lacey resumes bitch mode and blames Daisy for crashing her honeymoon. When Daisy points out Lacey insisted she come, Lacey just says she didn't think Daisy would take her up on it. So this is now Daisy's fault. Also do not get me started on other characters listing Daisy's lay-off as one of her many "failures". She worked her way up to a managerial position and held the job for 10 years before the company was acquired and all of the now-redundant staff including her was laid off. How is this a failure? It felt like yet another chance for the other characters to just pile on her with their super critical bullshit. Tai pissed me off on the boat because he's the captain and has the most experience of all of them boating/sailing (considering that Lacey and Daisy have none). It's his fault that things went wrong - the captain is responsible. You take a party of 4 on a 10 day sail on your old-ass boat with only one other person having any experience on a route that is potentially dangerous on a boat with a serious malfunction and you scream and rage at Daisy when things go bad? Yes, she hit the wrong button but the crisis happened b/c Tai got someone to install a piece-of-shit autopilot for cheap that never worked right instead of having it properly done. He never even really apologized for that. As for Daisy, I can't stand it when supposedly mature adults consistently do stupid things that no reasonable person would do and end up creating drama and bad luck for themselves. That's Daisy. But she was the best character of the lot. Richard changes a bit and turns out to be a decent person - he even (view spoiler)[calls Lacey out on being a total bitch, especially to her own sister. (hide spoiler)] Tai has some baggage that explains a bit of his grumpiness but adversity doesn't give you a license to be an asshole. He also comes around but I just could not jump on the Tai bandwagon, given what a dick he was to her for no fault of her own. Lacey and Daisy (view spoiler)[patch things up after they're rescued but again, it's just not enough given how shitty Lacey treated her throughout the entire book. (hide spoiler)] As for Daisy, she (view spoiler)[decides to pursue her childhood dream of being a marine biologist, which just didn't work for me. Mostly because Daisy is ridiculous in so many ways that make this an unrealistic field for her. Despite being a "passion", it has not expressed itself at all in her life. She doesn't hang out in the ocean, go to aquariums, learn to scuba, etc etc - basically, there is 0 indication that she even gives a shit about marine bio until she decides that's what she now wants to do b/c she has always loved it. It's even more laughable that she screamed and almost jumped out of the water after they were shipwrecked and a fish, aka a "water thingie" brushed against her leg. (hide spoiler)] Pretty much every single character in this book owed Daisy a sincere groveling apology which she got from no one. And Daisy should have picked a career that felt more genuine and aligned with her character - and told all of these people to screw off.
