I went into rhis thinking it was a stand alone... boy was i wrong. I need a minute to process everything because... wow.

This was a great fantasy read! Political battles, espionage, murder to solve, treason, love triangle, blood magic! It has all the staple elements of a good book you could want. Fabulous Queer rep, with gay, bisexual, and trans characters at the forefront. Themes of race and class were also very relevant to the plot, and I thought this was just a great read! Definitely interested in book 2.

This book was fine. It was well written and had a collection of really interesting, diverse characters but they were mishandled. I’m so over the whole “super smart clever woman” when she’s really not, people just call her clever and she misses the big arcs of the story that would have actually made her clever. I’m also tired of there being investigations in fantasy books. If you’re not actually going to have part of the plot be actually INVESTIGATING these murders - what are we even doing it for?? I will say I enjoyed the vague “throple” romance - that was more unique and well-done. Overall though it was just pretty bland and I never found myself excited to reach for it.

I don’t know that this book did what it set out to do. I also think there should have been more magic, like it’s a cool system we got like nothing about. the writing was strange and almost disjointed in places. I was a little bit bored because the pacing was off to me too—the plot or scene would be super interesting and I’d be engaged and then it would get really slow and I’d lose interest. I did find the overall plot and the characters compelling! I will read the next one!
