It was wonderful. Sweeping, enthralling, and heart-breaking. It was a wonderful story. The author perfectly captures what had to have been a terrifying no-win situation. The will to survive and the inevitable fall-out for those who have to come to terms with the choices they made. This will take its place with some of my favorites.

As an avid fan of historical fiction and a historian I was extremely disappointed in this book. I was struck immediately by the anachronistic nature of the dialogue. Many phrases used modern terminology rather than time period appropriate phrases. Additionally the characters were superficial. Ms. Alcott never really exposed them and allowed them to grow. The romances were not believable. Lucile's incredible mood swings were laughable. The reason I gave this book 3 stars rather than 2 is because the plot aka the skeleton of the book kept me mildly interested. If only a more talented writer could use that skeleton and put some better meat on its bones.
