The story begins with Lu Minshing facing execution for treason against the crown by her alleged lover, prince Ren. Moments prior to her death, she begs the gods in heaven for another chance. Thus, we now follow Minshing’s second chance at life. With her dignity and innocence now undiminished once more, we see her character traverse through retribution for herself and her family against all the dangers out for her, all the while vowing to never fall in love again. But when King Reifeng’s favorite son Jieh gets entangled with Minshing and her plans to thwart the evil machinations of a suspicious villain, she’s afraid her plans might end in peril once more. 

This is an adventurous tale of love, conspiracies, and sweet revenge spun with a touch of magic and tantalizing court politics set historically in ancient China’s Jin Dynasty. I really loved the writer’s imaginative and action-packed writing style. For starters, she was also able to write a good found family dynamic and a longing-filled slowburn romance between our lead and her love interest. Furthermore, the writer managed to give this story an ending that was inevitably up to subjective interpretation. However, it would be a shame not to have a sequel! How unfortunate for this to have an open-ending. Lastly, this would actually be a really awesome recommendation if you’re interested in historical asian dramas.

chick flick revenge plotline but make it historical romance fantasy

OH MY GOD. THIS BOOK GOT ME GOOD. THIS BOOK HELD ME AT GUNPOINT. I love how balanced the tense atmosphere and the romance between Mingshin and Jieh. 

I'm obsessed with this. The ONLY reason it didn't get five stars was because of the info-dumps/really obvious exposition conversations.
