I can't remember when I first read this, since it was back when one of my kids read it so it's not only been a long time, but I'd forgotten virtually everything about it. It's a lovely book about how Opal ends up with Winn-Dixie, named after a grocery store/supermarket (an actual American chain, although not all across the country so I've never been in one) but you have to read the book to learn how he got that name. The dog needs care desperately, but he also has a gift for befriending people which is a boon to Opal who has recently located to this town with her father who is the pastor of a local church. Not only did DiCamillo garner a Newberry Honor for this debut book, she has gone on to win two Newberry medals and other awards/honours. This time I read the 10th anniversary edition that has one excellent change that doesn't change the story overall.

I don't remember what I thought about this book the first time around other than that I thought it was good.

Yes friends I did just read this entire book in a half hour just for the heck of it and yes I am glad I did. This book is so cute and so nostalgic for me like you have no idea. So much goodness, it always makes me think of the first time I read this and watched the movie at the same time, I cried so freaking hard y'all I was a mess.

A short, sweet book about opening yourself up to new people and opportunities, and letting go of things that hurt you. I love this book just as much as the first time I read it as a kid!
