so much happened in this book and so quickly. while i don’t really mind different points of view, the amount of going back and forth between five(?) different women got slightly overwhelming for me. the ending was a giant cliffhanger so naturally i am curious to see how it all ends.

20th book read while I'm still home because the Covid-19 is still out there.
I swallowed this book. I could not put this down. This royal family had my heart from the first page. What a story, what a romance. I was so deeply invested in these people lives that I managed to do nothing with my own besides eating this book up. This is quite the review giving that I usually don't like royal-based stories.

So I had very high expectations of this book because of the hype and the reviews. I did enjoy some parts, but some seemed under dramatic. This also could have been my lack of interest in contemporaries lately. I do really want a sequel to see what is next, because the feelings of certain characters were left on a cliffhanger. There was also some aspects that resembled The Selection and stereotypical royalty storylines.

I absolutely loved this book. I loved the concept of what if America kept the monarchy and the little ironic sentence making fun of democracy are so funny. I really liked how this was through the point of view of Nina, Sam, Daphne, and Beatrice. Absolutely love all of them but Daphne does get on my nerves. The end was just plot twist after plot twist and I am really excited to read the next book.

Based on social media (hey bookstagram!)  everyone  is reading this book, and  everyone  is absolutely in love with it. I have to be honest, I can't really determine why... It was not good. 

First of all, the characters are all horrible, entitled, stupid people. I hated all of them (except sort Connor and Nina - both of whom are the "normal" people in this story). The rest of them were so catty, and ridiculous. I get that the book is depicting royalty, so a sense of entitlement is probably baked into their personalities, but I think you can write royalty without making them awful. (Sidenote: I also felt much the same about the characters in McGee's THE THOUSANDTH FLOOR; however, I ended up liking that story much better). 

Second, I thought there was some mishandling of the history aspect of this book. Of course, there has to be a willing suspension of reality - it is a book about American royalty, after all - but I just thought McGee kind of missed even basic tenants of American history. As a historian, that kind of bugs me. But it didn't bug me nearly as much as how much I disliked the characters.

I doubt I will read the rest of this series, because I just can't with these people. But you never know....

I really wanted to love this book but I just didn't. Daphne's POV was so random and useless to me. I skipped almost all of her chapters. There was only 1 storyline out of the 4 (or was it 5? I could not keep track) that I was actually invested in. I didn't like the ending and I've been told that the sequel is even worse so I'm just going to pretend that everyone lived happily ever after.

i truly enjoyed this book SO much. i loved the alternating perspectives, i felt that it gave the book so much more personality and we got to understand the feelings everyone had on american royalty, both insiders and outsiders. the characters were so well written and i really loved all the crossing love triangles, drama, and scandal. i would 100% recommend this book to someone else and i can’t wait to read the sequel!

A fun Alternate History

This book is fun because it reads like a soap opera on the page. This book had so much drama, and I was so living for it. I couldn’t stop reading because I wanted to follow these characters and their plots more.

I'm going to give this a 2.75. I was really excited when I first learned about this book. A monarchy in America? Sign me up. I couldn't wait to read this, but unfortunately I just had a lot of issues with this. It didn't hit me with the cutesy romance(s) I was looking for. Going into this know that this is the first of a series...that was my huge mistake was not realizing this was just going to end on a cliffhanger situation. Ughhhh I know that's my own fault though for not knowing that. Having said that I don't believe I will be reading anymore from this series in the future. 
Having said that, I really loved this idea of America having a King (or Queen) and I loved reading about that. Basically take how England is with the love of the Queen and the patriotism and just the (overall) adoration of the Crown and bring that to America and it's so fun! With that idea alone, I was ready to give this a 5/5. After that though, I didn't really like anything else about this. The characters are all really unlikable-which is not always a bad thing in a book. But for a contemporary romance I'd like to at least root for one of the characters. The drama was over the top....even for royalty, there was a disconnect between the characters and their chapters. I don't feel like it all flowed smoothly together, and none of the characters stood out to me. They were all so selfish and petty, and dramatic and it just went on and on with no real evolution to the story. And this was unnecessarily LONG. 

The only part of the character development that I actually enjoyed was Samantha and Beatrice's relationship. But that's it. That was the only thing that developed over this almost 500 pages that I liked.

um ok this is like 3.5 rounded down. i was so invested in some of the plots but then like half of the book i hated what was happening especially daphne, i literally could not stand her povs.

i really only care about beatrice’s storyline tbh. if this was a book series with a different character per book maybe i would’ve liked the plots better. it was just a lot of ok so in the end it wasn’t my fav. the storylines weren’t bad it was just the execution of them. i think multiple povs took away from everyone’s separate stories. 

i don’t know when or if i’m gonna read the next books but i have a feeling they would be better than this one.

i feel like this entire book was an intro despite it having its own backstory. 

all that negative aside i did really like most of the characters and i like the idea for this plot. i had a good time reading it and while i didn’t have a burning desire to read more i definitely couldn’t have not finished. <3

This book was great… other than the ending (which I’m praying gets resolved in the sequel). I loved all of the characters!! Even Sam who was annoying as heck half the time and Daphne who is an evil maniac. The relationships were AMAZING!!! The only thing that bothered be about the book, other than the ending, was how much each relationship went back and forth from good to bad… and I mean EVERY SINGLE RELATIONSHIP!! It was like no one was able to be happy for just one day. And don’t get me wrong drama is great, book drama is what gets me through life, but I swear their relationships were on and off every five seconds. Oh and if Connor and Beatrice don’t get married I’m going to die… Anyway great book, I guess iffy plot

I just finished it and I already want to reread it. If you liked Red White & Royal Blue, Crazy rich Asians or grew up saying "shut up" like Princess Mia from The Princess Diaries, you will not be able to put this book down. With multiple perspectives and story lines this book kept me wanting more and I can't wait for the next book. A book about respect for those around & yourself, loving your family and understanding that you don't know what is going on in everyone's lives. This book is an instant classic.
