Constantinople, 1599: as merchants from all over Europe are vying with each other for trading rights in the Ottoman empire, the wealthy merchant Paul Pindar has been entrusted with an extraordinary gift for the Sultan. But disaster has struck on the journey from England, threatening Pindar's mission and his trading relationship with the Sultan. He is, however, preoccupied with rumours that Celia, the woman he loved and thought lost, has been enslaved in the Sultan's harem.
