Hence I was looking forward to it. However so far, while I have LOVED everything I have read by her as Katie Allen, this was just a so so start to the series for me. To start with I could not help but feel the heroine is the most inept teacher ever, since one kid almost drowns then she loses 2 others. Then on the search she kept getting distracted by how hot the hero was. And their history, which seemed to have made a big impact was just sort of brushed over. She is a qualified teacher, and he has his own business, as well as being in a dive rescue team, had split up 4 years before, and I sort of got the impression that they had been quite young at the time, and they made reference to the fact they were young and immature, hence making me think they were teens BUT only 4 years had passed! And a LOT had happened in 4 years, she had started seeing their mutual friend, married him, divorced him and been divorced for over a year. I just kept thinking - It is only 4 years, 1. how much more mature and grown up are they really (and how old are they now?), and so much seems to have happened in that time. Oh and this is a short book, and so much extra "drama" just took away from the emotional aspect of it. The kid who nearly drowns, the lost girls, the search effort, them getting lost, seeing a suspicious character in the wood, coming across the hide out of a suspected arsonist, a bloody mountain lion! I actually like the hero, the heroine was a bit "meh" and overall would have liked more focus on them as a couple and their history. An ok, disappointing 3 stars given how much I love her books as Katie Allen. And yet, I am going to carry on with the series however, hope it improves.

Derek made the mistake of putting the goat that he hoped would become their team mascot in the front of Callum's truck, so when he ate the seats, Callum decides to punish Derek by making him do a presentation to a group of 3rd and 4th graders. Derek has no idea how he will make this presentation, especially when he sees Artie, his former flame, disciplining one of the students in her class. While Derek is showing his equipment to the class, two of the girls dare one of the boys to walk out on the icy pond. When he accepts the challenge, Derek's presentation becomes more hands on than he would have liked. On His Watch is a novella in the Search and Rescue series. Rather than creating a short story to introduce the characters, there is so much is crammed into just over 100 pages that it is difficult to figure out where this story is supposed to go. There are so many story lines in this book, that none of them are developed or satisfying. I've been looking forward to reading this series, so I'm hoping that the rest of the books are better than this one. Overall, On His Watch is a missed opportunity and a disappointment.
