Closer to a 3.5. Book is written in a strange way—the multiple short-story style is explained by Kaga himself, but it’s a bit too matter-of-factly. Might just be the nature of translation.

I enjoyed the story but it wasn't as engaging as his other books. Newcomer is a well-written whodunnit that reminded me a little of Agatha Christie's books. The protagonist, detective Kaga, slowly unravels what is happening in the lives of the families caught in the sphere of death. At times I was more interested in the drama of the family-run businesses and their tangled lives and completely forgot about the murder! Eventually, the mystery is solved and the journey to this discovery is worth it. This was less of a thriller or page-turner and more a cosy read. This was my first completed book since 24 February. It was perfect because while I had high expectations, Newcomer neither thrilled nor disappointed, but rather reminded me how much I missed reading a good book.

Let's just say even though I wasn't expecting much, this books till managed to disappoint me. This was my first book of Keigo and I have 2 more sitting on my desk, I hope those turn out better. This one was average, slow(not burn), and, ended mildly. Wonder why this was rated 4.01 on goodreads !

The review is for the translation, which is horrendous. The book is filled with one cliche after another. I have read pretty much everything Higashino has had translated to English and this is the worst of them all and it is all down to the translation.
