WOW. I NEVER SAW THIS BOOK COMING. I WAS TOTALLY SURPRISED BY EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED. *sarcasm*

until I found that there is, indeed, a sequel. 
but for the first tow years after first reading this book, I said to everyone, THIS BOOK DID NOT END RIGHT!

i absolutely hated this. i usually don't dnf books even if they are bad, i just pull through, but for this book i really could not. every single character was annoying asf, the love interest was creepy af and the author just couldn't get to the fucking point. i truly couldn't do it anymore. the scene that gave me the rest and made me dnf was a massive red flag of the love interest varen where he *

This book looks chunky with 543 pages, but it is a quick read. I enjoyed it because it kept the young adult horror aspect but stepped away from vampire-land. This isn't your Twi-mom's "Twilight".
As many know, I attend a convention known as Ravencon in the Richmond, VA area. This literary convention features a sci-fi/fantasy theme but also incorporates horror. I served on staff for several years at this convention and in that time I renewed my love of Poe and learned more about his personal life.
Poe is probably one of the few American classics authors that I actually love. That year of school where we studied American Lit was tough for me. I will never be a lover of "The Great Gatsby", "The Scarlet Letter", or other books of that ilk. Poe, however, I love. I feel bad that he had such an unfortunate life, but he truly was a brilliant and gifted writer. Though born in Boston, he grew up in Virginia, a fact I am ashamed to admit I did not know until Ravencon. I blame the failings of the American School System since I grew up not one hour from his home. (I'd like to also point out that I'm a mere 90 minutes from Fort McHenry, where the US National Anthem was written and yet I did not know this either until I was watching a reality television show a few years ago.)
This book features Poe as the driving force bringing the two main characters together. He is the subject of their latest school assignment. What I love is that the author used the book to educate people on Poe's background without making it seem like a boring biography. A book where you can learn something without realizing you learn something is made of the win.
The characters are your typical high school stereotype: popular cheerleader dating popular jock and goth loser boy. Some of the base teen pop dragged or seemed stupid to me, but the Poe-geared story line totally made up for it. (Seriously, she's grounded and sneaks out to do a school assignment? On what planet would a parent not allow you to do a school assignment regardless of groundation? And don't get me started on how upset her father was when she broke up with the jock boyfriend. Wouldn't most dads be happy to have their teen daughter in a singleton status? I thought dads weren't supposed to like their teenagers dating, at least not seriously dating!)
If you are a lover of YA Pop, you might like this book. If you like "soft" horror, you might enjoy the read. If you are a Poe lover, this book will amuse you as it interweaves Poe's life and death with a couple of high school kids.
Besides, there's excellent use of ravens in this book. And that alone is awesome.

Dieses Buch war seit ich es vor vielen Jahren (nach der Erscheinung) gelesen habe eines meiner absoluten Lieblingsbücher und verantwortlich für den Beginn vieler meiner Obsessionen, wie zum Beispiel Lippenpiercings. Als ich es das erste Mal las, begann ich (nach einem tränenreichen Ende) einfach noch einmal von vorne, was bezeugt, wie fasziniert ich war. Nun wollte ich es nach Jahren noch einmal lesen, hatte aber Angst, dass meine persönliche Veränderung mir die story madig machen würde. Es kam jedoch ganz anders und ich las es innerhalb eines Tages durch. Das Buch gab mir wieder das Gefühl von zuhause, von Nostalgie und einem Wiedersehen mit einem alten Freund und ich habe mich wieder sehr in den Seiten verloren. Im Grunde handelt es sich ja um ein Highschool-Drama, eine Liebesgeschichte mit Fantasy-Hauch und einen Hintergrund der Gothic-Szene.

The book was gothic to the meaning of the word.A well written story that I can assure you is the new twilight...maybe even better.It's both scary and romantic.Has an edge of historic lines in it and introduced me the amazing Edgar Allan Poe.
I recommend this book to everyone.

First and foremost, for all you out there that love or hell even like Edgar Allan Poe in any way I recommend reading this book. If you don't know much about him there are references in it.. that help you to understand him better. No need to read a memoir on him because this is more of a fun way. So if you're like me, and don't know a whole lot about him or some of his other works that aren't "The Raven", "The Tell-Tale heart", "Annabell Lee" or a few others then this book helps with that. It goes in to detail about his life. (Not like full on detail, but just enough) This makes me want to go and read some of the books I have about him. I think I have his complete poetry, and another one I bought last year at HPB. Anyways, enough about Poe on to the rest of the review. I told you easily distracted.

I'm not very good at reading almost 600 pages because I'm easily distracted, and want to move on to other things. This is one of those books that was well worth the 543 pages of reading. I honestly didn't want to stop reading it, but after awhile my eyes started hurting so I had to put it down. Just to pick it back up again. :)

Why did I love it you ask besides the above mentioned reasons? 

I love how Isobel and Varen's relationship didn't just BAM happen. It took its time, and it developed casually in my opinion. They are complete opposites as well Isobel is the perky cheerleader, with the star football player boyfriend, the popular friends. Even with all that though she seemed different as a character. Like there was more to her. Then you have Varen who is the gothy, mysterious boy who people like to make up rumors/stories about. (Poor guy some of the stuff they say about him. I would have him over Brad anyday. Just saying!) Then you had some of Isobel's popular friends. I'm sorry, but they are not your friends if they treat you that way just because you make a few friends who are different. I ab-so-freakin-lutely hate that. I had that happen to me in middle school I think. I wasn't in the popular crowd, but still same difference. (What does same-difference mean?) Anyway I made friends with certain people, and then a friend I'd been friends with since like 2nd grade stopped talking to me. What the hell is up with that? Granted I occasionally talk to her now. It still was hurtful. I loved Gwen's character as well. She kind of just pops out of nowhere. She's like the odd girl who becomes the one person wo Isbobel could talk to, and who tells you like she sees it. I think there is a little bit of a love triangle in the book with Brad, Varen, and Isobel. Which is fine most books have that. You can already tell whos side I'm on. :) I love me some silent types. I must admit I did get irritated with Reynolds. I'm not sure exactly who he was (maybe I have somewhat of an idea) but he would pop up at the weirdest times, and never fully answer Isobels question she asked. It was always him answering a question with another question, or something that was beyond Isobels understanding. Crazy guy! Yeah so that was my character analysis. :)

Not only did I love the characters, but the storyline itself kept me wanting more. At first it was just about the project, and I think Isobel trying to learn about Varen. Then after awile I think things escalated for her, and weird things start happening to her and around her. Her reality started to become more twisted. Her perception of things became distorted. Was she just dreaming, was it all in her mind, or is it in fact real? One minute she'd be in one place the next she'd be somewhere completely different. Did Varen have something to do with it. What was he hiding in his notebook? I think that's what kept me reading. 

I think it wrapped up nicely as well. It's not one of those that leaves you on a complete cliffhanger. Maybe the epilogue at the end did a little. Hum. It would do well in my opinion as one book (although I'm completely looking forward to the second one that's apparently not coming til 2012. Such a long time.)

I've seen somewhere that the bookcover used to be a little different being that Varen had a lip ring. They shouldn't have messed with that. I think it would have made the cover sexier. :)

I will definitely be buying this book at some point.
