Like Front Desk (2018), Lina as she assimilates in ways that are easier for children than their adult counterparts, she sees where things aren't as her parents believe them to be. Her fresh take on things helps her family move past their current situation in ways they otherwise wouldn't have. It's not that she swoops in and saves the day, it's more that her complete lack of understanding of how things are makes her question how things should be. Part of what helps Lina understand her new life is a graphic novel, Flea Shop. It's a fictional book, one made up strictly for the book. But, damn, like her classmates, I'm sold on it. I really wish Kelly Yang would take a turn at writing a graphic novel and write Flea Shop. http://pussreboots.com/blog/2023/comm...
