Kenneth Oppel

A haunting coming of age story that will hold you captive, The Nest is lyrical, surreal and one of the most moving stories you'll read this year.

The Nest

Steve just wants to save his baby brother—but what will he lose in the bargain? This is a haunting gothic tale for fans of Coraline, from acclaimed author Kenneth Oppel (Silverwing, The Boundless) with illustrations from Caldecott Medalist Jon Klassen. For some kids summer is a sun-soaked season of fun. But for Steve, it’s just another season of worries. Worries about his sick newborn baby brother who is fighting to survive, worries about his parents who are struggling to cope, even worries about the wasp’s nest looming ominously from the eaves. So when a mysterious wasp queen invades his dreams, offering to “fix” the baby, Steve thinks his prayers have been answered. All he has to do is say “Yes.” But “yes” is a powerful word. It is also a dangerous one. And once it is uttered, can it be taken back? Celebrated author Kenneth Oppel creates an eerie masterpiece in this compelling story that explores disability and diversity, fears and dreams, and what ultimately makes a family. Includes illustrations from celebrated artist Jon Klassen.

Short and terrifying.

2.5? This wasn't bad, but it wasn't for me. I recently lost a nephew who had congenital issues and expected the subject matter to hit harder, for there to be some sort of message or something that Makes You Think, but it was a pretty run of the mill horror that seemed like it should be geared toward middle-grade kids. I wasn't in love with the writing and the story kind of fell apart by the end. The final confrontation was like bringing a knife to a gun fight and winning.

She was very blurry, not at all human-looking. There were huge dark eyes, and a kind of mane made of light, and when she spoke, I couldn't see a mouth moving, but I felt her words, like a breeze against my face, and I understood her completely. "We've come because of the baby," she said. "We've come to help." All Steve has to do is say, "Yes." But "yes" is a powerful word. It is also a dangerous one. And once it is uttered, can it be taken back?

I honestly have no idea what I just read. This was one of the most confusing and bizarre books I read this year so far, and the only thing I'm gonna ask is how on earth is this marketed as a middle-grade book?! HOW?! If i had read this while I was a kid, I would have been fucking traumatized by wasps and other topics this book deals with. The rating is merely due to the fact that I didn't find it interesting at all, only confusing and boring. But I do think that this book shouldn't be described as a middle-grade book, AT ALL.
