I had really high expectations for this book and it really didnt live up to the hype. I liked the first 1/3 as it set a good pace and really described the world and characters well. The rest felt so rushed and started throwing in so many different elements that it became really confusing. The characters began making decisions that made no sense/ were not fully explained to the reader. Their emotions became really flat at some point and the story began to focus on the developing romance rather than the original storyline. I really dont know if I’ll read the next book in the series… :/

L’inizio è un po’ claudicante. Da un’autrice che non è certo una debuttante mi aspettavo una maggior destrezza nell’introdurre personaggi e scenari.

La regola dovrebbe essere “Show, don’t tell”, ma qui è un contino tell, tell, tell.

Il world building è “troppo”: troppi luoghi, troppe stirpi, troppi poteri, etc. tutti insieme, uno tsunami che travolge il lettore.

Fortunatamente, man mano che si procede, la storia ingrana, e il romanzo diventa decisamente più fruibile: non rischiamo più un’indigestione per aver mangiato troppo in fretta, perché finalmente ci viene dato il tempo di mandare giù un boccone alla volta.

Il trope dei fates mates non mi fa impazzire, anche perché trovo che spesso e volentieri si ponga troppo l’accento sull’irresistibile attrazione fisica, e il primo “incontro” (se così possiamo chiamarlo, dato che lei era addormentata) mi ha fatto storcere il naso.

Le successive interazioni tra Maevyth e Zevander hanno una base molto più solida, da rapporto che si costruisce pian piano, e le ho apprezzate.

In generale possiamo dire che una volta che il world building ha raggiunto una sua forma, l’intreccio procede in maniera tutto sommato lineare, anche se lo stile dell’autrice non sempre lo è.

Lo spice è meno di quanto potremmo immaginare, e c’è una buona di horror a accompagnare le vibes gotiche.

Attenzione ai trigger warning: anche se non descritti in modo particolareggiato, ci sono riferimenti a passati abusi subiti dai personaggi che potrebbero urtare la sensibilità di alcuni.

Il libro si conclude in maniera piuttosto rude, come uno stacco improvviso di corrente, e magari qualcuno potrebbe recriminare che in 700 e passa pagine non succede chissà granché. Se la prima parte è effettivamente lenta e poco accattivante, la seconda, pur procedendo con i suoi tempi, riesce a essere immersiva.

Insomma, volevo fare un bilancio, è andata molto meglio di quanto sperassi dato i primi capitoli, e sono ansiosa di proseguire la storia.

I can’t describe in coherent sentences how much I loooveeed this book. It was creepy and mysterious and sexy and had everything I love in a fantasy book.I loved all of the main characters and the ending was a cliffhanger that leaves sooooo many questions for the next book. I CANNOT wait to read the next one when it comes out
