The window and the waiting of five toy friends is a sweet concept, the artwork is magically round and soft with colored pencil hues. And unfortunately in the end, because who doesn't love a Kevin Henkes book, the reader is also left waiting. Waiting for the penny to drop. Waiting for the connections to the toys and their longings, their long stretches of staring out the window, the point of losing a friend in the process and somehow gaining friends as well. My 8 year-old son and I loved the quiet anticipation that ever-so slightly builds and to be honest we were more nonplussed than moved at the end. And what the what, no endpapers?
