What a delightful surprise. I admit I bought this because of the cover. Oops! Now. I have become pretty disenchanted with fantasy recently. Too much miscommunication, or some trial or games we have to see our heroine battle through, and too much "spice." My hopes with this one is that maybe I wouldn't seen some of those tropes I don't much like. And I didn't see them! A great read! Now, could I have made a YA-fantasy bingo card? Why yes. But that is quite alright. The pacing was great, I loved how she built her characters, and I loved how it was all set within the court (I love a drama of the gentry). Would I have liked to see more of certain characters? Sure. Loved it all the same.
