I love the author’s writing style. I really enjoyed the storyline and most of the characters. Muddy is a 17 year old girl growing up in the 70s in a small down in Kentucky. She is suddenly forced to grow up when her momma is found hanging in her house. The authorities are ruling it a suicide but Muddy knows her mom would never do that. As she tries to find out the truth about her momma’s Murder, she also uncovers truths she wished she had never known. She also faces the prejudice of the Klan and the era when she becomes romantically involved with a mixed raced boy. The story will keep you on the edge of your seat and there are twist and turns you don’t expect. **Trigger warnings: Murder, graphic language, domestic abuse and racism. While I do enjoy this author and her stories, and she does write with the times, she is an author that has A LOT of domestic abuse and degrading of women in almost all her books.
