I remember loving this book, so we shall see what happens. I read it about three years ago, and I forgot what it was called for the longest time. I just found it again, so I'll see if I still like it.

Well, it's not what I remembered, that's for sure. Haven was annoying and bipolar, and Iain is a little brat. Sad, but true.

I'm so surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! I'll be honest with you, I wasn't expecting to like this a whole​ lot. I mean, I'd never heard of it, which I know doesn't mean anything, but I was just skeptic, that's all. And I definitely wasn't expecting something close to a thriller, either. But I'll get to that in a minute. First, on to the synopsis!

Haven Moore has always known there was something meant for her outside of the small town of Snope City. She's had strange memories of a girl named Constance and a guy named Ethan for her entire life, and she knows things about New York City that she couldn't possibly know, especially at the age of two. But never before has she imagined she's remembering another life with... well, the love of her life - I mean, her whole town is convinced she's possessed by the devil himself. The only thing keeping her in Snope City is her family; her best friend, Beau; and the fear she's wrong. But when she sees the playboy Iain Morrow on TV, she knows in the deepest place of her heart that it's Ethan, and that her life's purpose, what she's been pining after her entire life, is in New York City. But in the midst of secrets, who can she trust?

Alright, on to the fun stuff! 

Firstly, I know this sounds like just a love story. Trust me, I thought so, too. But it is literally so much more than that. Actually, the romance was probably one of the only aspects of the book that even bothered me a little bit. It was almost too perfect, if that makes sense. But then other times, it was sweet and real... I don't know. That's one thing that really confused me, but I think that was kinda the point: to confuse readers so they definitely do not know who to trust... which leads me to what the book seemed like to me: a thriller. 

It was much more fast-paced than I thought it would be. There was so much secrecy around the whole "who should I trust" aspect, and I didn't know any more than Haven did. Though I'll admit I didn't quite agree with a few of her decisions, and about 3/4 of the way in, I decided who I trusted (and I was right), I still felt as though everything flowed so well and was realistic given the circumstances. 

On that note, I was also super impressed with Miller's writing style. At first, the tone was small-town-ish, with an almost coming-of-age feel. Then, within 50 pages, the tone changes to a contemporary romance, and then to a thriller. And you know what? I didn't even notice until later, because every time she switched, it wasn't really a "switch" necessarily, if that makes any sense at all. Honestly, I attribute this to her being a genius. When a situation warranted it, she made her tone what it needed to be to make the story perfect. And I think that's what makes this story feel so unique, and I can't wait to pick up the sequel.

I encourage you to never go into a book with low expectations for this exact reason - you're not giving the author enough credit. Which leads me to the question, why doesn't Kirsten Miller have more popularity? It saddens me that such talented writers can become underrated (or unknown) so quickly.

Oh, and one other thing: I really appreciated Miller's introduction of Christian values in the book. Though I will say most of the Christians in the story don't give Christians a very good rep, if you know what I'm saying, I appreciated that she even deigned to mention it and introduce it as an almost integral part of Haven's life.
