           I understand this is a book but some things genuinely confused me about this plot line. (Spoilers below)

1. Why is a cop from DC randomly heading down to North Carolina to investigate his niece’s disappearance in an official manner? Conflict of interest aside, wouldn’t that be out of his jurisdiction?
2. Why did the escaped victim of a serial kidnapper join the FBI squad and go on stakeouts to observe said kidnapper? I get they’d need her help but flying her out to California to pursue the kidnapper seems far fetched. 

Honorable mention: the fact that Alex Cross lives in the bad part of town and drives a Porsche. And also that he and Sampson randomly beat up some Durham police officers and stole their guns with no repercussions.

I was indifferent throughout this novel. Yes, what's going on is horrifying, but Patterson did a poor job with pacing, and actually building suspense and realistic characters. I watched the movie when I was far too young and remember it being a scarring experience, so when I stumbled across the book I was curious. However, I ended up being disappointed.
