**Update: see what I have written in my update to the first book in the series. I do not know what I saw in this book or how I could have possibly rated this book so highly the first time around. This book did not survive round two of the "purge" from my personal collection.**

This book just might be my favorite in the series, although it's hard to choose because I really do love them all. 
I like this one so much more than the second one because there's so much character growth, especially for Abbie. She wasn't a static character before by any means but in this book she had to change. Circumstances changed her and she had to learn how to grow from there. (I can't say too much more without giving away a spoiler, albeit a fairly obvious one.)
The emotions Heitzmann captures in this book are so real and gut-wrenching. It would be almost impossible to come away from this book without having felt something. 
Also, those few trite, Christian historical fiction clichés that appeared in the first book on the series? They definitely don't make an appearance here. 
I can't recommend this book or series any higher. They're absolutely incredible.
