So beautiful. There was so much pain in this book and happiness. I loved it. I cried at the funny parts and at (so many) sad parts.
I've never read any historical fiction, but I think I might look more into it now that this book got me hooked.

This book truly speaks for itself but wooow, such a masterpiece and whatever i read after this i feel like will be a disappointment. If you like any form of historical fiction this is going to be your cup of tea, if you´re not usually into it i still think you need to give it a shot. Hannah really paints a realistic picture of what living in France during the German occupation was like. The dual POV really makes sence and I feel like they´re both the main character of this story. The ending made me cry soooo hard, it just wrapped the story in a pretty bow. MUST READ!

The nightingale

At the start, I was a bit unconvinced by the author's style of prose but ended up reading this 600 page book in about two days so in the end have to say I enjoyed it. Beautiful and horrifying story of WWII.

The New York Times number one bestselling titleBravery, courage, fear and love in a time of war. Despite their differences, sisters Viann and Isabelle have always been close. Younger, bolder Isabelle lives in Paris while Viann is content with life in the French countryside with her husband Antoine and their daughter. But when the Second World War strikes, Antoine is sent off to fight and Viann finds herself isolated so Isabelle is sent by their father to help her. As the war progresses, the sisters' relationship and strength is tested. With life changing in unbelievably horrific ways, Viann and Isabelle will find themselves facing frightening situations and responding in ways they never thought possible as bravery and resistance take different forms in each of their actions.Vivid and exquisite in its illumination of a time and place that was filled with atrocities, but also humanity and strength, Kristin Hannah's The Nightingale will provoke thought and discussion that will have readers talking long after they finish reading.

Five stars and a lot of tears! This book broke me… and I mean that in the best way. The Nightingale is one of those stories that slowly pulls you in, then completely wrecks you by the end. It’s heartbreaking, powerful, and so beautifully written. I loved how it showed different kinds of strength through the two sisters—both fighting their own battles in a war that changed everything. It’s not just about survival, but about courage, sacrifice, and the quiet ways people show love. There were so many moments that made me pause… and a lot that made me cry. Another five-star read from one of my favorite authors—and definitely one I won’t forget.

My heart is just aching. This is such a tragic and beautiful story. I honestly am at a loss for words.

Kristin Hannah knocks it out of the park again. She does such a wonderful job pulling together a historical fiction novel. Those last few chapters were ones that kept your mind reeling as you tried to put the final pieces together, and tears were shed.

In love we find out who we want to be. In war we find out who we are. FRANCE, 1939 In the quiet village of Carriveau, Vianne Mauriac says goodbye to her husband, Antoine, as he heads for the Front. She doesn't believe that the Nazis will invade France...but invade they do, in droves of marching soldiers, in caravans of trucks and tanks, in planes that fill the skies and drop bombs upon the innocent. When a German captain requisitions Vianne's home, she and her daughter must live with the enemy or lose everything. Without food or money or hope, as danger escalates all around them, she is forced to make one impossible choice after another to keep her family alive. Vianne's sister, Isabelle, is a rebellious eighteen-year-old girl, searching for purpose with all the reckless passion of youth. While thousands of Parisians march into the unknown terrors of war, she meets Gäetan, a partisan who believes the French can fight the Nazis from within France, and she falls in love as only the young can...completely. But when he betrays her, Isabelle joins the Resistance and never looks back, risking her life time and again to save others. With courage, grace and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of WWII and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France--a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

A Novel

Wow. This had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I loved the dual timeline/pov between the sisters. Their two different stories weaving the tale of WWII and just how different it can be from person to person. The ending blew me away and I honestly cannot imagine a single thing differently about it. Perfect.

A heartwrenching, gripping tale of female influence during the second world war, where we follow Vianne and her younger and more irrational sister Isabelle through Nazi occupied France.

Already having a strained relationship between the sisters and their fathers, Isabelle already knows she wants to have a greater impact for her country. Taking the code name of the nightingale, she goes on to recover over a hundred fighter pilots from the allied forces who are stranded in France after being fallen by german forces. Risking her own life and everything she loves, she continues, until she's captured, tortured and enslaved in a concentration camp. Her love story with Gaetan is tear worthy, with the ending of the book tearing my heart out repeatedly, then ripping it into hundreds of thousands of pieces. Killing her from a disease that was just a cumulation of all her difficulties was the twisted knife in the proverbial chest. I didnt even undestand how she died until I googled it. I could not believe it. And how her dad, a man who emotionally abandoned them to alcohol after the loss of their beloved mother and his wife, ends up giving his life for his daughter, giving himself up as the nightingle broke my heart again.

Vianne is her older sister, who goes through so much so silently. She's riddled with guilt for being unusually close with the billet Nazi German, Captain Wolfgang Beck. Let me just rant about him for a second. He's so obviously a good man at heart. A man who cares about the suffering around him, who's so clearly a moral, religious man who' so disgusted with the Gestapo and the SS and their actions to the men, women and children around them. With the way these two were forced into such proximity, how Vianne was stripped of any of her martial relations with her MIA husband, Antoine (who's a sweatheart by the way), and how Captain Beck, a man with a loving wife and children at home, is also starved of similar love, it's so blatantly obvious that they'd feel some sort of romantic feelings between eachother, especially because he is one of the only gentle and emotive german officers in the entire police force. And then there's the fact that he looks out for Vianne, apologises to her, feels bad, shows empathy, shows his clear hatred of Hitler's actions, of Hitler's police force. When he died, my hands shook. A good man lost in a bad situation. It was so obvious that the end to their friendship and relationship where the lines were so heavily blurred was inevitable. It would either end in his or her death, and its so depressing to come to this realisation as you see the way he treats her, how he treats her kids, he compliments her food, he allows her to keep her home to herself, he takes the smallest room, he brings home wine and cheese and gifts her daughter chocolte. He brings her documents he knows aren't a hundred percent true and he was patient with Isabelle, who so obbviously had so much rage and angst and only felt she could inflict it on him. His death, as tragic as it was, was inevitable. Someone had to die before their relationship was no longer a blur, there was no longer a fine line and they would have ended up doing something stupid and irreversible. I don't even have enough space to explain how sorrowful I am for Vianne' experiences with her next Nazi. How he left her with a child of rape, who ultimately became an American surgeon. How he gave her so much pain and she never tells Antoine, never tells anyone except Sophie, who died herself of cancer later on. And when they take Ari from her? I flipping hated it. One child isn't going to change an entire demographic to grow. They traumatised the poor child so many times, he's now had three mothers, ttaking him from Rachel, then from Vianne, then to his Auntie had my heart aching so bad. The immense pain this women suffered silently was heartbreaking. She says at some point, that men tell their stories, whilst women just get on with it, and you can so clearly see that here.

This book was amazing. I'll never be the same.

The writing style is beautiful, but in contrast to the other two Kristin Hannah books I’ve read (The Great Alone & The Four Winds), this did not captivate me until there were only about 100 pages left. It made me cry and think, still, but it wasn’t one I felt compelled to keep picking up.
