Josh, an introverted teenager with hopes of becoming a mystery writer, is en route to a summer writing intensive when his car breaks down. He finds himself in a small Mississippi town where a peculiar crime has just been committed and, unfortunately, all clues point to Josh. When the local sheriff halts repairs on the car until the situation is sorted out, Josh must overcome his shyness to become an amateur sleuth. Along the way he makes a bunch of enemies, a couple friends and meets the girl of his dreams. At night he works on his old-fashioned British mystery in preparation for class and the famously invasive Southern vine, kudzu, grows in through his window. As the lush, leafy kudzu climbs into his room, people from town and their characteristics creep into his writing. The two stories start overlapping and entwining. Clues in one help him work out the other, but in the end when both mysteries are solved and the culprits revealed the real question is: will Josh get the girl?
