While the Oz book series has its merits, this installment suffers from L. Frank Baum's weakness for introducing too many superfluous characters who overstay their welcome. The large, bloated cast leads to tedious, repetitive introductions that bog down an otherwise interesting premise and morally complex resolution. Despite a unique villain and plot, the excessive character clutter detracts from an otherwise superior entry in the later Oz books.
