this is one of those books that would benefit from not putting the mcs in a relationship. alice and lottie work much better as friends, they don't seem to have that much romantic chemistry, and especially not enough to <spoiler>say i love yous one second after getting together</spoiler>. and that line that goes like, <spoiler> for a moment, just for a moment, the surge of love outshone the feral hatred in my heart </spoiler> bjsjkdjkdbjkd MADE ME ROLL MY EYES SOOO HARD. very much giving vibes of lesbians moving in together after the second date, however...

there are some confusing cuts. for example, they're <spoiler>hiding by a store and suddenly lottie is hurt because of the rubies, and she starts to scream</spoiler>, but we don't get an elaboration on what happens after that. the chapter ends and we are in the car from alice's pov.  or when <spoiler>they're in the hospital, and alice says she tore through the veil</spoiler>, and in the next chapter, we're already in the future with a time skip, missing conversations. it would be better to pick it back up in the next chapter from the other pov? it makes no sense. it's supposed to build suspense but it doesn't because we are missing what feels like very important pieces of a puzzle. it's anticlimactic, and makes the pacing weird. 

however, i really enjoyed the atmosphere of this book. it promised dark academia and it delivered. i found myself relating to alice as well, so that was fun.

I liked most everything about the plot of this book, but the uneven pacing and lack of character depth really let me down. Like there are endless descriptions of Lottie’s sunny disposition and Alice’s gloomy one, but we don’t learn what the title means until 80% of the way through the book! And we never see the entire society together until the final scenes?!

I enjoyed the dark academia setting and the sapphic moments. But I didn’t like how the author handled the SA trauma of the characters. And while I saw how the themes of women’s rage were intended to bolster the Jekyll/Hyde adaptation, it felt like the Secret Society of Misogynists somehow undermined that.

Also how is this already the second book I’ve read this year where a woman kills a cat with her bare hands?!

I really loved the concept and ideas behind this book but not so much the execution. It is just another one let down by the general atmosphere in spite of having a good cast, a creepy premise that it is not afraid to commit to and stronger themes (which in this case are female rage and misogyny and power imbalance) - the novel just never seems to reach its full potential. Regardless, it is one of the more interesting and realised YA novels published recently.
