The very word 'troll’ much like 'manosphere', is a hopelessly benign euphemism for a much darker reality.

In other words, domestic violence is a kind of terrorism, just a quiet, unacknowledged, everyday terrorism.

As someone who can definitely be categorised as ‘terminally online’, it’s really interesting to see someone who hasn’t necessarily grown up with the culture and terminology of the internet try to unpack it.

As will all things that are internet based, despite the fact it was written recently, some things are super out of date. Other things were misinterpreted/treated uncharitably, but overall this book was like a bucket of cold water.

There are so many things that I’ve witnessed online and heard about that I have ignored or looked over because it’s not my problem or it doesn’t relate to me, but the problem is that it does. I can’t turn off being a woman.

I don’t think I’m the target audience for this book, in my opinion it is around 100 pages too long and reaches a little to get to some of its conclusions. But if you want to despair a little at the world and get mad at pathetic men then read on.

Everyone should read Laura Bates, especially men. The amount of research and careful analysis of toxic masculinity and hate towards women eclipses everything I’ve read before. It’s a painful, raw read, but a necessary one to understand the driving forces behind organised movements targeting women.

Only informative if you’ve never been on the internet but otherwise a good organization of the argument

An exploration into the recesses of one of the dregs of humanity, both on- and off- line, about deeply misogynistic communities and what these groups look like, how their beliefs and actions present themselves.

There’s power in how Laura Bates does not censor anything, a choice I deeply appreciated and respected. You read the words of these people in full transparency, faced with the depth of their hate it adds understanding to how disturbing and concerning their belief systems. This is even further emphasised upon with later elaboration into actions taken and the political influence these groups have- it’s a problem we cannot afford to ignore, and yet it continues to be denied rightful attention and resourcing to address it.

With injections of Bates’ own wit and sarcasm, and notes of hope for intervention strategies and recovery chances for boys who are at risk from such communities, it was a fascinating read. Grim and frustrating, endlessly so, but also enlightening, balanced, and informed. A must read.
