Much cozier than book 4. This series is so fascinating because it shows you the lives of settlers. This book just made me appreciate that more.

I think these are starting to feel just a bit repetitive. I expected the writing to mature a bit as Laura became older, like the Harry Potter books did, but that hasn’t happened yet. I’m not sure it will. Also, there’s even less emphasis on plot movement and characterization than in previous books. The inclusion of songs was quaint in the first few books, but was far overused here. However, this is where the plot started to really diverge from that of the show, so that maintained my interest a bit more. I will be continuing, as I really want to finish the series, but I think I’m going to give myself a bit of a breather before starting book six.

In the days of the building of the railroads and the final settlement of the West the Ingalls family moved from Minnesota, the scene of On the Banks of Plum Creek, to Dakota Territory. Pa became a railroad man for a time until he found a homestead and filed a claim. The family spent the winter in a surveyor's house sixty miles from the nearest neighbor. There was excitement when Laura and Mary took a thrilling train ride and when the attempted payroll robbery took place. That winter the family spent their happiest Christmas ever. In the Spring Pa put up the first building on the town-site near his claim, and two weeks later there was a brand-new town.

           Definitely in my top 3, with big woods and farmer boy. Just really wholesome, and I LOVED the new characters that were introduced, like the couple that showed up at Christmas Eve. I can’t wait to read these to my future children!

Ma and the girls follow Pa west by train where they make their home at a rough railroad camp and plan for their own homestead.

As with the other Little House books, I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Laura's path has finally crossed with Almanzo Wilder's, so I am very excited for the next book!

By the Shores of Silver Lake is based on Laura's late childhood spent near De Smet, South Dakota, beginning in 1879. The book also introduces Laura's youngest sister Grace Pearl. Sadly, in the beginning their beloved dog Jack dies of old age. Laura meets her cousin Lena Waldvogel who becomes her good friend (Lena was the daughter of Laura's Aunt Docia, who married August Waldvogel). Because her sister Mary is blind due to an illness, Laura also acts as Mary's eyes and becomes kinder and more mature through this service. When they first move to the railroad camp, the Ingalls stay in a railroad shanty, and the following spring they are able to stake a claim of their own. Also her father gets offered a job in the west by his sister.
