Wild Things

Welcome to my first book of 2025 and What a book to start with a book about finding your true self and working out what you need and want in life. This is my First Laura Kay book, and I can’t remember where I first heard about it but I’m glad that I was as this one is the perfect start to my 2025 Reading journey.

We meet Eleanor; she is an introverted, organized, quiet late-twenty-something woman living in London. She has a steady job, a group of best friends Jamie, Ray, and Will, and her life is exactly the way she likes it. Except for one thing: she’s in love with Ray, her lesbian best friend. After a few years of being (comfortably) stuck in a rut, El decides she’s going to try a “wild year,” and do something wild every month. One of the wildest decisions turns out to be a decision for all four of the friends: buy a dilapidated old country house just outside of London, live in it, and fix it up together.

What transpired over the course of the book is Eleanor going on a journey of Self Discovery to learn about herself through her “Wild Year” wanting to learn more about herself and push here out of her comfort zone. Kay brought a sense of humour, chaos but with an undertone of warmth and personality to all the characters that make you fall in love with each one of them over the course of the book.

Wild Things highlights the love of a Found Family. It’s also a charming trip to a small town in England, complete with a zany but delightful cast of characters. This is a comforting and warm queer romance that I would highly recommend.
