Wow, another amazing book by Laura Kinsale. I loved this just as much as For My Lady's Heart but for different reasons.

I don't typically like books with toxic relationships but this one really did it well. (view spoiler)[I don't typically like rapey heroes, but this one was effective in making the heroine's transformation into a powerful princess all the more cheer-worthy. (hide spoiler)] I never thought I would be into books with BDSM, but it totally worked in this story. The power struggle between Allegreto and Elena was delicious and my have awoken something in me lol.

I hadn't really considered Laura Kinsale to be a writer of explicit sex scenes, but this one is definitely hotter than her previous books I've read so far. And what makes it even better is that they aren't just thrown in for the smut factor, but are an important part of the story and character development.

Allegreto is such a tragically broken hero and it made me so happy to see him meet his match in Elena and finally find his HEA. Elena doesn't come off as very strong at first, but she really turns things on its head. I think it definitely helped that she had Melanthe (the heroine from FMLH) as her kickass Godmother. It was also so sweet to see Melanthe and Ruck in marital bliss, even if for just a brief snippet.
