I checked this out electronically from my local library. So cool!! This is supposedly not based on a particular case, but some similarities will be noted. The book is full of quirky, interesting characters, but they are not really developed, which is the reader's loss. One of the big questions in the book is why the 15 year-old abducted Eliza never tried to get away when she had the chance, and why she didn't try to warn away the 13 year-old Holly rather than let her abductor Walter abduct (and subsequently kill) her as well. She has been somewhat drifting through her life, although it would seem more likely that she would be wanting to have more control, one would think. It's a fairly fast and interesting read, but it could have been so much more.

this book wasn’t the fast paced thriller i had been hoping for but it was an interesting read nonetheless. definitely expect more of a character study than action. i also found the story line with trudy, a victim’s mother, to be unresolved and unfulfilling. i would definitely read another of her books though, her writing style is nice.

I read this book in two days. It just captivated me! Although I wish it had been a little more disturbing/detailed/gory but I'm weird in that way. I know some people were disappointed with the ending or thought it was anticlimactic but I thought it was just right.

Great writing. The angle of the story is very unusual. Main character does not garner a lot of sympathy and can be difficult to understand but this makes the story different from most stories of this nature. Laura Lippman is an excellent writer. It is always fun to recognize the areas in her stories as they are set in the Baltimore area. Definitely recommended. My bookclub had a lot of questions and good discussion around this book.
