An Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novel

Burnt Offerings

Feared by vampires as "The Executioner," Anita Blake finds herself not only sharing a bed with Jean-Claude, the Master Vampire of the City, but also defending St. Louis's vampire-owned businesses from an arsonist, policing a local werewolf pack and their alpha, her former lover Richard, and playing politics with the vampire ruling council. Originally in paperback.

This is a far better book than the six that came before it in the series.

Anita is a lot less annoying here, and she starts earning her role as MC. There is less blah blah about weaponry and less empty grandstanding. The dialogue is a tad less cheesy and more to the point, and fitting with the story development.

The plot follows a logical progression but there are still enough surprises to keep the reader on her toes; and everything that happens with the characters contributes to their development and characterization, which is a VERY welcome change.

As a bonus, this is where Asher and Nathaniel are first introduced, so there’s that.

This is a reread for me and so far it’s mostly been a guilty pleasure, one of those series that make you roll your eyes but keep you coming back because they are so bad they are good 😁 But this one I actually really enjoyed! So 4 STARS it is.

I like what I like.

Vampire hunter Anita Blake winds up trying to save the very monsters she has sworn to destroy when an arsonist begins terrorizing the city's undead.

The series turned in such a dark and nasty direction... the mystery is "solved" in the last three pages, like an afterthought. The relationship... uh, I don't know, honestly. I just really don't like Jean Claude... and Anita suddenly being stupid next to him, giving up her boundaries... there was one moment when J.-C. called her "ma petite" again, and Anita thought "the way he said my name...". Nuh-uh, that's not your name, just in the previous book you hated this 🤦🏻‍♀️
And all the "healing" and action (if you know what I mean)... oh well

'You can't trust anyone who sleeps with the monsters.' That's what I've always said. That's what I've always believed. But now I'm the one sharing a bed with the Master Vampire of the City. I'm Anita Blake, the woman the vampires call the Executioner. From part of the solution, I've become part of the problem. So it hits close to home when an arsonist begins to target vampire-owned businesses all over town - an arsonist who seems to want to destroy more than just property. It's the monsters who are in danger now. And it's up to the Executioner to save them from the inferno.
