In terms of plot-to-sex-scenes ratio, this is probably one of the better Anita Blake novels. You wouldn’t be able to tell unless you read the whole thing, because the bulk of the sex scenes are in the first 1/3 of the book.
Truth be told, if it weren’t for the explicitly sexual content and violence, the plot in this specific book would be fit for a soap opera — family drama, mixed identities, old flames, chaos ensues. It would be so much...

, frankly — except for the fact that the emotional range is beyond a cheap soap, and actually adds dimension and relevant backstory to beloved characters (especially Jason, who is my favorite male character in the entire series, BAR NONE.)

Overall, not a bad book. Not a lot of eye rolling, some good dialogue, well-distinguishable secondary and side characters (despite the sheer number of them), which really helps frame the story and give it “credibility”.
That said, it doesn’t quite reach 4 stars for me because a plot revolving around family drama in this series feel a bit like fluff, and I didn’t always feel compelled to keep reading, so 3 1/2 STARS it is. 

I do give it props for the introduction to traditional tiger clan customs, and for introducing Crispin, who promises to become a new favorite.
