Reading it as a matured person, this book broke me. I don't think I would have been able to pull through it, had the characters been older, with a deeper understanding of the world. The implied things about Liza's backstory... They break me.
Lionel is a boy who has always understood animals, almost talked to them and Marybeth is a gentle nine-year-old. Together, they are the 'invisible' ones in Mrs. Manner's pseudo-orphanage.
One day, Lionel sees a blue apparition in the forest and decides to tell his great friend Marybeth about it.
They even go to investigate, but come back bare-handed. One night, Marybeth wakes up in the middle of the night. She ends up being found in a barn, but the events of the previous night had changed her.

(Ok you did it to yourself, even though it's technically my fault for not hiding the review- I just had an awful day and once people find out what I did, albeit unconsciously, my life will probably get worse than it already is)
Marybeth was possessed by a ghost. Well, she can control it. Most of time.

I just... it's beautiful. It really is. But the backstories... 
It's a story about friendship and understanding mostly, but I'm in actual tears right now. That might be because of my day or because of the memories that resurfaced while reading, but still
