I wish there was more social-cultural analysis, the glimpses Slimani gave of examining this intersection between islam and sex in a more in depth, historical and analytical manner were great, but there was so little immersive, ground breaking analysis. it was incredibly well put together, she paints the image of modern morocco for women very well, the collection really stands as a snapshot in time, a momento of real stories. i think i was expecting more essay style work, hence why i feel like its a lacking in some ways. still a solid, insightful read, hopefully this will spark my own research and further reading into the intersection of islam and sex.

this was a really insightful and validating book. i’ve seen a lot of reviews suggesting that Slimani only included essays that support her ideologies, but i think she gave a platform to the critiques that are often used out of context, villainised, or completely ignored. mediterranean culture and its obsession with female purity (across all major religions of the regions) remains a black cloud above a lot of us; the pressure, the concern and the shame that comes with it.

This was really eye-opening and tough to read occasionally .... but at times it felt slightly repetitive and I took too much time to read it than I probably should have so ended up being slightly confusing sometimes. Still did learn quite a lot from it .
