Diálogos insólitos, situaciones extrañas y un aire de magia absolutamente real impregnan las aventuras de Alicia. Si Aventuras de Alicia en el País de las Maravillas nació por casualidad de los relatos fantásticos que Lewis Carroll improvisaba para tres niñas, Al otro lado del espejo narra el viaje a un país hecho a modo de tablero de ajedrez, al que llega Alicia después de cruzar el espejo. Para adaptar el mundo a la mente infantil de las tres hermanitas Lidell –Alicia, Lorina y Edith–, Carroll prescinde de prejuicios y utiliza un humor cruel y lleno de ingenio con el que burlarse de los convencionalismos y tradiciones de la sociedad inglesa, y a la postre de cualquier sociedad... Los elementos con que juega la narración no se apartan de lo que Alicia puede ver en su vida cotidiana o en sus libros, pero la imaginación eleva a emblema irracional la lógica, convirtiendo las aventuras de Alicia en uno de los primeros ejemplos de libertad absoluta de la mente, que encadena su lógica a partir de unos presupuestos que no la tienen. Así, mostrando el envés de los valores aceptados, Carroll se adentra por un territorio de sueños donde no hay más fantasmas que la verdad desnuda de sus apariencias y de sus mentiras.

"Found it," the Mouse replied rather crossly: "of course you know what it means."

"I know what it means well enough, when I find a thing," said the Duck: "it's generally a frog or a worm. The question is, what did the archbishop find?"

"Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin," thought Alice: "but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!"

So she went off in search of her hedgehog.

The hedgehog was engaged in a fight with another hedgehog, which seemed to Alice an excellent opportunity for croqueting one of them with the other: the only difficulty was, that her Flamingo was gone across to the other side of the garden, where Alice could see it trying in a helpless sort of way flying into a tree.

The executioner’s argument was, that you couldn’t cut off a head unless there was a body to cut it off from: that he had never had to do such a thing before, and he wasn't going to begin at his time of life.

The Kings argument was that anything that had a head could be beheaded, and that you weren't to talk nonsense. 

The Queen's argument was that, if something wasn't done about it in less than no time, she’d have everybody executed, all round.
