Meet Clara, a chook (chicken) with dreams & aspirations of being a crime solving detective. Like the ones she watches on TV and learns from apparently because she is one smart chook. Clara's beginnings start at Boss's (Aunt Gina's) farm where she unfortunately is last in the pecking order. Bullied by her brethren, their merciless criticism of Clara and the beauty (or lack thereof) of her eggs stokes the fires of determination. She manages to solve the Mystery of the Stolen Eggs and realizes even more that "I don't think it's right that I'm supposed to make myself small and humble, just because he's a rooster and I'm a chook." As luck would have it Constable Dad stops by with his Girl Detective Olive (like in Amelia X). She absconds with them in the back seat of their cruiser all the way home. Olive quickly soon finds out that Clara is no ordinary chicken and proceeds to teach her the ways of texting. Things take off swiftly from there with visits to Olive's school, investigations leading all around town and figuring out the puzzle of the Stock Theft. This story unexpectedly features multiple topics such as feminism, bullying, grief, theft and possibly child neglect. Exceptionally well written, most noticeably when touching on grief and bullying. Very age appropriate but can be read by anyone which I highly recommend. I do think Amelia X is mentioned a few too many times and some other bits that slowed the story down a little. Don't let that deter you, you'll still enjoy the journey and the warm fuzzies from reading this in one sitting!
