This book at turns made me weep, laugh, and envy Jim Beaver the wonderful family he has. While my family life hasn't been as idyllic, I can understand loss well enough. This book reflects parts of the human condition that are universal, but boils it down into something personal and human. I fear for the people who read this and aren't moved.

In August 2003, Jim Beaver, an actor known for his roles in both Deadwood and Supernatural, and his wife Cecily learned that their daughter Maddie was autistic. Six weeks later, Cecily was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer. Jim began writing a nightly email as a way of keeping friends and family up to date about Cecily's condition. Cecily died four months after being diagnosed, but Jim continued the emails for a year. Life's That Way is a compilation of those emails; a day-by-day account of what it's like to live through a nightmare and to navigate life anew.

This was the most honest, heartfelt book I've ever read. Jim holds nothing back in his nightly emails to friends and family, and by the end of the book, you feel like you've been on the emotional journey with him. It's beautiful, moving, and yes, sad. Jim is eloquent, yet personal, and provides much needed humor during such a painful process. Even if you're not a fan of Jim, or don't know who he is, this is a good read. Anyone can relate.
