I liked this novel mainly about state police sniper Bobby Dodge, and introduces detective D.D. Warren. The first of a new series, evidently. A lot of surprises and twists and turns. It was a good thriller type story, and I thought Gardner unveiled the psychological aspects very well. I actually liked it better than some of her other books, so will try to find the next in the series.

Hello! This is going to be slightly spoiler-y. I think I would rate this book 8.75/10 (rounded up to 5 stars coz why not), because it was definitely a page turner. Lisa Gardner seems to have a knack for these.
In Alone, we are introduced to Bobby Dodge, a police sniper who acts on instinct and shoots (and kills) a man he believes is about to shoot his wife and son. There are a lot of loose ends though - why is the wife (Catherine) thankful to Bobby? Has Bobby done the right thing? Bobby certainly spends a long time mulling over his guilt. Then there's the custody fight over the son, Nathan. Who's the good guy?
The first time I read a Lisa Gardner book was about a year ago when I picked up Find Her. Find Her had a slightly similar backstory as Catherine's past trauma. I quite enjoy Lisa's writing about women and crimes against/involving women. 
Back to this book - I really like Bobby. I like seeing him struggle with his morals, even though he can go a little overboard at times. I do like Catherine as well but she is more ambiguous. This isn't exactly a spoiler but get this: SHE LOVES HER SON FOR REAL. I'm really glad she does. I loved watching Nathan grow closer to Cat. I admire her character because it is quite a carefully carved character, and I admire how she takes her own agency and turns herself into a weapon (sexual allure). I also quite like the shrink, Dr Lane, and I wish we could see her more often. OH I ALMOST FORGOT I loved how Bobby's own past is somewhat tied to his feelings to this whole case (sorry for being slightly spoiler-y but I'm trying to be as vague as possible!). 
Now on the ending: (view spoiler)[Whoa the judge is so much more fucked up than I expected. WHAT EVEN I did not foresee that he was The Ultimate Bad Guy who was willing to sacrifice everyone to protect himself and his half-sister/wife. That's fucked up. Incest. Passing bad genes to your kids and grandkids. WHAT. Comparing this ending with the ending of Hide, I would say Hide's ending was a touch more satisfying. But anyhoo - Cat is reunited with Nathan and he gets better, poor child. (Also WHY DID HE HAVE A FUCKING LINE ABOUT "you're trying to kill me" Nathan make up your damn mind do you love/trust your mom or not?!) I'm slightly sad that Bobby doesn't go with her BUT I think that's perfectly in character, because Bobby can never not work. He needs work. Sorry, Cat, he needs to work - it's in his blood. Anyway I read Hide (the second book in the series) yesterday and I'm ready to read the next book. I don't know what that says about me. Page turner alright!

By far one of my favorite mystery/thriller authors ever. I have never not enjoyed a Lisa Gardner novel and detective D.D. Warren is my favorite character of hers. I loved this book even though D.D. Warren wasn't in this one as much, which is why I'm confused that it says it's the first in her series. Nevertheless, still a great read just like all her other works.

This book was fantastic. From the beginning, where the author described the hell that Catherine went through when she was 12 to the call where Bobby shoots Catherine's husband to the scene where they release the man that harmed Catherine to the end...it was fantastic and a great read.


There were a couple of plot twists in the book. Did Bobby know Catherine before he responded to the domestic disturbance? Is Catherine abusing her 4 year old son? Why is Catherine's son so sick? Did Catherine set the whole thing up? Will Mr Bosu find Catherine? What will he do her when he finds her?


This book keeps you on your toes and you need to read the next chapter to find out the answers to the questions that you ask yourself as you read.
