Wow, what a rollercoaster. I was so confused how the different POVs were going to connect which kept me intrigued. Lots of mentions of sex. I don’t think I would’ve gotten hooked on the series if I had started with this one. So far, DD doesn’t seem to be the star of the novels despite it being her series.

This book was such a rapid change of pace from the last. The subject topic is really dark, with a lot of violent descriptions. Turns out I’m not that good with descriptive gore (I winced more about stabbings than gunshots... maybe stabbings just seem more painful?)

This book is especially interesting, because the link between the three narrators - DD, Danielle the nurse and Victoria the mother - isn’t clearly established at the beginning. It took time to see how these puzzle pieces fit together, but when they did come together, I was in awe. That’s the spirit!

On characters, I like these characters. I like reading about their emotional turmoil. I also find myself a little heartbroken... especially about little Lily.

I had to race through these pages. I had to. The urgency really amped up here, compared to the last book. (I think out of these four books, The Neighbor had the least urgency, even though rationally speaking I know a disappearance would be urgent...) I did have some ideas of who the real villain was, and I’m glad my hunches weren’t that off!

Do I believe in the energy stuff? I don’t know. Maybe, maybe not. I think it was definitely a very interesting aspect to include. Also about the characters - I realized the detectives always get things wrong. As much as I’d like to root for DD, the police are always a touch too late. It’s an interesting dynamic.

I’m writing this review like 3 minutes after I finished the book. I’m still shook so I’m giving this a 9/10. It definitely gets really dark... but 9/10.

I love Lisa Gardner. What I really appreciated about this one was the unique plot. As someone who reads a ton (and lots of mystery/thrillers) I feel like I can often figure out the ending or the twist. This was not the case with this one! I will say for anyone who has mental health/childhood trauma struggles it could be slightly triggering and the initial scene with the main character is a little more graphic than normal for a Gardner book.

Another great Lisa Gardner novel. I love all the suspense and guess work and how she can take things that are so twisted and turn them into a great read. Can't wait to read more.
