I bought this book because the cover intrigued me and it sat on my shelf for years until the day that I was bored enough to read it. I was so surprised by the wild gore and horror. Grubbs Grady has stiff red hair and is a little big for his age, which means he can get into R-rated movies. He hates history and loves bacon, rats, and playing tricks on his squeamish older sister. When he opts out of a family weekend trip, he never guesses that he is about to take a terrifying journey into darkness. Hungry demons and howling werewolves haunt his waking nightmares... and threaten his life. This book is perfect for readers who are beginning to grow up and crave darker horror stories, especially ones with lots of gore and blood. The protagonist is a character that a lot of teenage boys will think is gross and cool, and the story that Grubbs takes us on is surprisingly dark and deep for a book for a younger audience. This works well as the first book in a ten book series while also telling its own singular story. I loved the relationship Grubbs had with his uncle. I think many readers will be surprised at the level of world-building that this book for younger horror readers has, and we only get a small taste of it in this book. Highly recommended for newer and younger horror fans.

I first read this when I was in school and I recently found the series set in a second-hand bookshop so I had no choice but to get them 😂 Absolutely loved this series as a kid and really wanted to reread them to see if they're still enjoyable, and can say they definitely are!

It is more of a middle-grade book so it's obviously written for a younger audience and the writing style reflects that. However, it makes for a quick fun read for all ages. The middle section was a little uneventful but it didn't impact the rest of the book negatively as it still moved quickly.

There are some disturbing/violent scenes throughout which are described in great detail so if you really hate gore I'd suggest skipping, but if you don't particularly mind gore I'd give it a go as it does feature a good story.

All the characters were well done and quite relatable, it felt they had depth and room for development. They were also very likeable, even the demons, so I really enjoyed reading this as a whole.
