The first time I read this (and watched a version of it) was for an English camp the summer after 4th grade, and I was understandably not a fan because the film was horrifying and gave me nightmares. Returning to it now, I do appreciate how Jacobs has taken the oldie-but-goodie concept of "be careful what you wish for" and crafted an enticing story. While the consequences of the White family's wishes are predictably awful, the writing manages to create suspense and capture a wide range of feelings and motivations within a very short story.

(The story was, unfortunately, not very creepy or otherwise captivating.)
