I don't think a book ever made me or will make me feel this mad as this one did - the manipulation, the toxic mindset of some characters, the storyline in some points (not in a bad way). I wanted to scream so many times while reading this. You were able to feel some of the upcoming parts in the plot but it didn't ruined the book. 

There so many reasons for me to be mad while reading it, the ending being the biggest one. Even tho, I felt it would be a sad ending I still hoped that somehow things will change. It didn't. After reading it I felt like I needed a hug and a hot cup of coffee or tea.

About the characters: I despised Thomas from the moments he appeared but in process I got to hate him even more. The guy gave me second hand embarrassment so many times. I knew he wouldn't survive in the war so I was feeling at peace when he left.

Karl, enjoyed his character first half but during the second one I got to hate him during the second. 

About Herta's family I don't think I have enough words to explain the rollercoaster that I've been through.

Anna and Erna loved them and felt really sorry for the second. I really hoped she would have survived, she really deserved a happy ending, but due to the given circumstances she died with her family in a concentration camp.

Walter and Herta, loved them both. There were some times when I felt like it's not it but in rest it was really sweet. At some points in the book I really thought that they might made it. Unfortunately not....

The ending made me feel really empty and lonely _

this book is devastating, beautiful, and dynamic in so many ways. we are following Hetty through growing up the daughter of a high ranking Nazi officer in Germany in the years preceding WWII. you follow her journey of discovery of her different ways of thinking, her challenging the world and discovering herself and what she believes. this book is filled with hope, but also travesty. the writing was absolutely incredible and I was so invested from cover to cover in Hetty and Walter’s story. tears were shed (for sure) while reading this book however I think this book overall shows the hope and courage that we can all have to preserve through our circumstances and challenge the way of thinking. to love people, because they are people and deserve to be loved. 
I haven’t read a whole lot of historical fiction and this reallllly made me wanna get more into it and I enjoyed this so much.

Heart wrenching story! It started off a little slow, but by the end it became one of the most intriguing books I've read this year. I felt like my emotions were all over the place while reading this (not necessarily in a bad way).

Solid historical romance. Enjoyed hearing the way German children were taught in school to be molded in the Nazi view. Loved Hetty!
