(2.25/5) Audiobook - 1 hour 24 minutes - This book was just fine. It wasn't bad but it really wasn't anything particularly special and I really don't feel like it added anything much to the storylines and character development of the characters it discussed. The audio format also got slightly annoying at times - it felt like half the time I was just listening to email addresses being read out. I am aware this is not necessarily a fault of the book itself but of the transition between media, but it still significantly impacted my enjoyment of the book.

           I’m... officially head over heels with the Simonverse??

This felt like coming home in the best way possible! I missed these kids so much!!! I especially missed Simon’s perspective, and I loved that reading from him again felt the exact same as reading from him in “Simon vs.”. He’s incredible, and I was home again.

I also loved the glimpses we got into Leah and Abby’s relationship??? THEY’RE SO GODDAMN CUTE AND I CAN’T HANDLE IT.

I also started to figure out how this was going to end from around the halfway point (but in all honesty, I’ve already seen “Love, Victor”, so, like, it was obvious - I’d recommend maybe reading the novella first? But I will say, me knowing about ~the thing~ didn’t make me enjoy seeing it happen any less!!)

Just, yeah, overall I really REALLY loved this, and now I need to re-read “Simon vs.” and “Leah on the Offbeat” BECAUSE I ALREADY MISS THEM THANK YOU.

eh... that was kinda hard to follow as an audiobook. a lot of it was reading out the actual email addresses, which got all jumbled in my brain. and also, hp references? still? come on.

In this novella, we read the emails sent between the main cast of the Simonverse books, mainly Simon, Bram, Leah and Abby. We see how they are doing during freshman year in college, especially how their relationships are going. Abby and Leah are thriving, getting to share a dorm room together. Simon and Bram are struggling with the long distance.

I had an issue with the audiobook when the big group emails were being read. With every single message, the narrators would read the full header of email including all of the addresses of all of the recipients. Had I read it with my eyes, I would be able to easily just glance at the header, glean what info I needed and moved on. Unfortunately, that's not how it's done in the audiobook. Every single time the narrators gave every single detail and it took me out of the experience. It was a little funny, though. Surely there has to be another way to convey this information.

Luckily most of the emails only had one recipient so the headers weren't too hard to listen to. In general, the novella was cute and delivered on sweetness between the two main ships. It was a very easy read. Had I still been invested in the characters like I was when I read Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in 2019, I would have gotten more from it. Still, it was a pleasant little read in the morning. If anyone is reading the series back to back and is really invested, this novella is a sweet little cherry on top.

For all the time Becky Albertalli spent saying she wouldn't write this book, I'm pretty glad she wrote this book.

It was great to see the next steps in the gangs' lives as they head off to college and try to balance their relationships with the new dynamic. For Simon and Bram, that is being long distance, while Abby and Leah are roommates (the queer college kid's dream).

This book is presented solely in emails between the characters, which was cute but unfortunately completely unrealistic. I haven't used my email for anything other than work and coupons since middle school. Suspending my disbelief to think this is something teenagers in the 2020s would do, this book has Albertalli's signature witty style and quippy comebacks between characters. IF these characters were going to email each other, this felt entirely in character. It was just fun to spend a little more time with the Simonverse crew :)
