Love, Life, and the List

Love, Life, and the List

Kasie West2017
What do you do when you’ve fallen for your best friend? Funny and romantic, this effervescent story about family, friendship, and finding yourself is perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen and Jenny Han. Seventeen-year-old Abby Turner’s summer isn’t going the way she’d planned. She has a not-so-secret but definitely unrequited crush on her best friend, Cooper. She hasn’t been able to manage her mother’s growing issues with anxiety. And now she’s been rejected from an art show because her work “has no heart.” So when she gets another opportunity to show her paintings, Abby isn’t going to take any chances. Which is where the list comes in. Abby gives herself one month to do ten things, ranging from face a fear (#3) to learn a stranger’s story (#5) to fall in love (#8). She knows that if she can complete the list, she’ll become the kind of artist she’s always dreamed of being. But as the deadline approaches, Abby realizes that getting through the list isn’t as straightforward as it seems . . . and that maybe—just maybe—she can’t change her art if she isn’t first willing to change herself.

3.5/5 • this was so cute!! i'm not a big fan of unrequited love stories, but Love, Life, and the List wasn't too bad. the novel felt like a classic kasie west: cliché, adorable, and somewhat cringey (in the best way!). everything about this was super addicting and i had to binge it; is there any other way to read a kasie west novel? (no.)

4.5 I’m super in love with Abby’s character. Plus her Grandpa is super adorable and amazing and really, just great. (I wish I had a Grandpa just like him.) I may be just a little biased but I’m sucker for characters who are sarcastic — in a funny way (this is why Chandler is my favorite from Friends). And Abby is just that. I was laughing and smiling and grinning a lot while I was reading this. It was such a heartwarming, easy read that I couldn’t put it down. This was truly a gem.

“Fall in love with someone who loves you back. Me encanta. También me gustó el hecho de que se hablara de salud mental, especialmente la que se trata en este libro, es un tema muy importante para mí. Gracias Kasie West. Y finalmente, este libro está dedicado a una de sus hijas, how cute is that? <3

Quick read, super cute! Great for reset after a fantasy binge. I love Kasie West’s books, they’re not heavy in material just simple day to day life stuff, similar to a sixteen candles or pretty in pink. Could never go wrong with her books for quick reads.

I can barely manage to write a book review, how does Kasie West publish like 508 books a year???? While this book was better than her 507 other books, it still wasn't good. Definitely not good enough for me to write a review for it. 🤷‍♀️

SPOILER ALERT: ending is cliche, a good read for when you're on the beach and want to get out of your head for a few hours. The characters were real and believable, complete with flaws and complicated relationships.

** spoiler alert ** SPOILERS!! Honestly... I'm a little disappointed. (view spoiler)[I think a better ending would have been Abby falling for Elliot while Cooper realized his true feelings. I get that imperfect characters are more real, but I really didn't like the way Cooper handled Abby's feelings, how he didn't believe her about Iris. (hide spoiler)] On the plus side, I loved Abby, her wit, her snark, and the writing was a lot better than a few of West's previous novels. I think what was missing for me was the sexual tension, the will-they-wont-they. For the whole book, Cooper seemed to avoid the idea of Abby liking him as more than a best friend, and then suddenly, when Abby is trying to move on, he realizes he loves her? For the whole novel, I was genuinely thinking this would be the first West book that doesn't end with anyone getting together, that the happy ending would be Abby having these new experiences and getting over Cooper. Anyway, Elliot seemed like the better choice for me. When he went to pick up Abby's mom and Grandfather for the art show, I truly thought Abby would start to fall for him. I still love Kasie. Her books are always quick, feel good reads. I will continue to read her work! I just wish the resolution and relationship didn't feel so rushed. Would love for Kasie to get back into the YA supernatural genre, because I still think the Pivot Point duology is her best work. The next part of review is just for hypothetical fun!! A better story for me would have been: Abby is in love with her best friend, who doesn't reciprocate her feelings. She is rejected from the art show, so she creates the "Heart List" to give her more experiences. On her first mission to cross something off, she runs into Elliot, and they end up going on an experience together. Soon, Elliot is completing the whole list with Abby. As she and Elliot get closer, Cooper becomes jealous (much like his behaviour already in the book). As they near the end of the list, Abby realizes that maybe she is over Cooper, and maybe there is someone she has feelings for instead. At the climax (same as novel - Cooper missing the art show), she realizes Elliot is the only one who has been there for her. Cooper is devastated by her anger, confesses his feelings, but Abby is over him. Only Elliot thinks she'll choose Cooper, so he starts withdrawing a little. Abby, confused, confronts him, tells him her choice, and then the happy finale is them finally getting together.

3.5 I enjoyed most of the plot of this book. I liked seeing Abby's journey to trying to become a better artist through experiencing new things, and I LOVED the family dynamic. This is now my second Kasie West book, and in both of them, she's included some mental health rep that isn't usually the main focus of the story, but it adds more depth than I was expecting. I definitely enjoyed that aspect as well. HOWEVER, all of Abby's peers were bland, cardboard cutouts of stereotypical teenagers. Love interest? Boring. Other half of friend group that is gone for the summer, leaving Abby alone with love interest? Who cares. The girl love interest is into? So full of girl hate I had to laugh because she was so ridiculously unrealistic. The fact that Abby would remain hung up on love interest when there is another boy around that is actually similar to her and understands her passions? Unbelievable. I cared way more about Abby's new friend Lacey (also this girl has made no new friends since her little clique was established in like middle school. like she has made no new friends in like 4 years) and the other guy who is obviously interested in her than in Cooper (previously only referred to as love interest) and her established friend group, who were conveniently written out of the story in order to Build Tension between Cooper and Abby, which just feels lazy to me. None of the side characters mattered to me, except for the ones that apparently didn't matter to Abby. I feel like I'm crapping on this book a lot, but LISTEN I ACTUALLY LIKED IT OKAY? Despite all the flaws I just pointed out, I feel like it was well-written, it was fun, and I had a good time reading it. Based on enjoyment alone, it would have gotten 4 stars, but once I focused on the parts of the book, I realized it had too many unnecessary side characters to really warrant that 4. If you are in the mood for a light, fluffy, summery beach read, I would recommend this book!

This book was super cute. I really loved the heart list that drove this book from page one to the end. It really was a strong book that really focused on the self discovery parts of both lead characters of abby and cooper. I really liked cooper as a character and how there story came to a end. It also dealt with harder issues like her mothers issues of leaving the house and also making your art more engaging. It was hard to put this book done and it is my new favorite kassie west novel. If you liked since you've been gone, I think this book would be right up your alley.

Kasie West and I seem to have a love hate relationship. I don't really LOVE any of her books they always seem to be just alright or I don't like them. I definitely think this is my favorite of her books so far. I really liked the overall story and sometimes felt connected to the main character. That being said I was not a fan of the ending. I wanted it to go in a different direction and felt like the ending didn't add up to where the character was growing towards.

More like 3.75 stars. It was cute, it was fast-paced, but just like with the other Kasie West book I read, neither the characters nor the story left an impression in me. Even though it isn't the best book I've read, I was impressed by how much I enjoyed reading this. Also, I think I'm really into the whole trope of unrequited love and being in love with your best friend, I definitely need to check on more books that feature them.

* 3.5/5 After Abbey Turner gets rejected from an art show due to the lack of heart in her paintings, she makes a list of activities that will give her more life experience. Her goal is not only to grow as an artist but also to grow over her feelings for her best friend Cooper. Will the list gives her paintings more heart or will it end in heartbreak? Love, life & the list is my first ever Kasie West book. Honestly, it gave me everything I would want from a fluffy romance novel. The plot pretty much resembles the average Hollywood RomCom story. It is overly dramatic and predictable. Not all plot developments made sense. However, I did find myself entertained while listening to the audiobook. The dramatic arc of the story definitely kept me wondering if this book had a happy ending. The characterisation of the main characters felt inconsistent from time to time. Some behaviour did not make sense with how a character previously acted. The relationships between the characters felt genuine and were my favourite part of the book. I loved the family and friendship dynamics! The main character was sometimes likeable and sometimes irritating. Since Abbey was seriously hurt by some events I could understand her sometimes selfish and irrational behaviour. Furthermore, I wished the author included more hints into the story to make the ending more plausible. The book was easy to listen to. The writing style is easy and simple. The author was at her best writing the dynamics between characters. She also did a great job of capturing a beachy atmosphere. My main issue with the writing is the lazy storytelling. For example Abbey and Cooper form a friendship group with Rachel and Justin. Both are conveniently not present in the story but far away on summer holiday. Secondly, the whole book is about Abbey’s growth into as an artist. Unfortunately, there was not any noticeable character growth. I enjoyed the world Kasie West created. I loved the whole summery vibe and the fact that it was set in a coastal town. I loved the role the list had into the story. It expanded the world because Abbey and Cooper went on some adventures to check things off the list. I wish the list had a bigger role in the story. Also, Abbey is supposed to be an amazing artist but her artistic process remained vague. I wished the author did more research for this part of the story. I also appreciated the introduction of some serious topics like mental health. Abbey’s mother deals with agoraphobia. Overall, it was a great summer book. It has a great summery feel to it, it set in a coastal town and it has a cute romance. This read is perfect for anyone who loves easy to read, fluffy books that make you smile and make you feel better. Rating breakdown: - Plot: 3.5/5 - Characters: 2.5/5 - Writing style and narration: 3.5/5 - Worldbuilding: 4/5 - Overall enjoyment: 4/5
